I Am Legend is a 2007 science fiction-horror-action-disaster film directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Will Smith. It is the third feature film adaptation of Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel of the same name, following 1964’s The Last Man on Earth and 1971’s The Omega Man.
Smith plays virologist Robert Neville, who is immune to a vicious man-made virus originally created to cure cancer. He works to create a remedy while living in Manhattan in 2012, a city inhabited by violent victims of the virus.
This movie has two strong points:
1. The beautiful scenery of the deserted New York City. The first 20 minutes of the movie are trully spectacular as we get to see a very realistic vision of the post apocalyptic world in the streets of NYC.
2. Will Smith. He is simply brilliant as the sole survivor Robert Neville and carries the whole movie without a problem. We can really relate to his hardship and everyday struggle with solitude, isolation and vicious zombies.
Now that I’ve mentioned the zombies, i must add that the use of CGI to portray them was a mistake! Computer technology has come a long way but here they look kind of fake and animated. They should have gone old school with classic make-up/fake blood and gore style.
This is a very good post-apocalyptic, zombie movie with brilliant performance by Will Smith. A must see!
