REC is a 2007 Spanish horror film co-directed by Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza. The film was released in Spain in November 2007. Balaguero and Plaza previously co-directed the 2002 documentary OT, The Movie.
REC was filmed using shaky camerawork and that approach results in some pretty scary and realistic shots. Although it was already seen in George Romero’s Diary of the Dead, the end result in Rec is much more convincing.
However, this movie must be compared to The Blair Witch Project for many similarities in filming and acting. For me, this style of film-making produces a convincing horror flick as did the original Blair Witch Project back in 1999.
This documentary style creates an effect with the audience that makes it much easier for them to perceive the plot as something realistic and probable. When you put flesh-eating ghouls in the mix, attacking their former neighbors in a sealed-off building, the end result is a very scary movie!
The acting in Rec is solid, with a few interesting twists and a couple of good scares. This movie provides good entertainment for the true horror fan. Additional tip: this movie must be watched at night, for the atmosphere and easier viewing!
