The Return of the Living Dead is an American zombie horror film that was released in 1985 and was followed by several sequels. The film was written and directed by Dan O’Bannon and starred Clu Gulager, James Karen, Don Calfa, Thom Mathews, Beverly Randolph and Linnea Quigley. The film tells the story of how two men accompanied by a group of teenage punks deal with the accidental release of a horde of brain hungry zombies onto an unsuspecting town.
This is one of those very rare films that combines good black humor with bloody, messy gore and does it perfectly. There are several interesting points to this movie. On one side, the teenagers here are not faceless, stupid, oversexed victims, but outcasts who are rational and realistic about their situation. On the other hand, for the first time on film, you have fast zombies, a.k.a. the runners witch add to the dynamic of the movie itself. There are no long explanation scenes, no boring set-up, just in-your-face excitement followed by an excellent soundtrack.
A very funny movie that has had significant success upon its release and spawned many sequels.
